Deputy Ombudsperson, Intake and Investigation
ADM Non-OIC – Permanent, Full-Time
Salary Range: $175,800.14 - $224,500.25
The Ombudsperson is a statutory officer of the Legislature with a mandate to investigate unfair administrative acts, decisions and policies of provincial public authorities either as the result of a complaint or acting on their own initiative. They have the authority to make recommendations to remedy administrative unfairness to the heads of agencies and the Lieutenant-Governor in Council.
The Ombudsperson is responsible directly to the Legislative Assembly and can also report out publicly on their investigations and recommendations. The Ombudsperson is assisted in their work by staff and has authority under section 30 of the Ombudsperson Act to delegate significant authority in order to exercise their mandate.
The Office’s mandate is the widest of any provincial ombudsperson encompassing over 2000 authorities. As set out in the Ombudsperson Act this includes all provincial government ministries, Crown corporations, boards, commissions, local governments, school boards, colleges, universities, health authorities, administrative tribunals and professional regulatory bodies.
In addition to investigating complaints, the Office of the Ombudsperson generally oversees the administrative actions of government authorities to ensure the democratic principles of openness, transparency and accountability are upheld.
The Office of the Ombudsperson also fulfills a non-statutory but significant role of providing corporate service support including business planning, administration, human resource, financial and information technology support to four independent Offices of the Legislature pursuant to negotiated formal agreements on the provision of Shared Service Support.
The Deputy Ombudsperson plays a pivotal role in leading the Office of the Ombudsperson to successfully deliver on its statutory and non-statutory mandates as well as ensuring the Office is seen as an effective, independent and impartial oversight agency that has public trust and confidence. To achieve these goals the Deputy Ombudsperson exercises considerable statutory powers delegated by the Ombudsperson under section 30 of the Ombudsperson Act and the Public Interest Disclosure Act.
