The Team:
The Flood Safety Section is a collaborative, multidisciplinary team responsible for provincial water infrastructure operations, flood risk management, and technical program delivery. This team includes engineers, technologists, and operational specialists who work closely with regional staff, the Ministry of Emergency Management and Climate Readiness, local governments, and First Nations. This team fosters a supportive, solutions focused culture where collaboration, clear communication, and shared accountability guide their work, enabling consistent, evidence based decisions and the safe, effective management of critical provincial water assets.
The Role:
We are looking for a Flood Safety Engineer to provide technical leadership in flood hazard management, dike safety, and river engineering. In this role, you will support regulatory oversight under the Dike Maintenance Act, guide key river engineering projects, and manage operations for Ministry water control infrastructure. You will also contribute to provincial flood preparedness and response, working closely with local governments, First Nations, and partner agencies. This position is well suited to an engineering professional who brings strong hydrotechnical expertise and a commitment to advancing provincial flood risk resilience.
Qualifications:
Education and Experience Requirements:
- A Master’s Degree in Engineering with emphasis in hydrotechnical engineering (specializing in hydrology, hydraulics or fluvial geomorphology), and three (3) years of directly related experience; OR,
- A Bachelor’s Degree in Civil or Water Resources Engineering with emphasis in hydrotechnical engineering, soil and geotechnical engineering, hydrology or fluvial geomorphology, and five (5) years of directly related experience; OR,
- An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
- Registered or immediately eligible for registration as a Professional Engineer with Engineers and Geoscientists BC (EGBC). Immediately eligible for registration is defined as currently registered as a Professional Engineer in another Canadian jurisdiction, and able to obtain registration in BC within six (6) months of employment. Confirmation of registration/eligibility is required before an offer of employment can be made.
- Demonstrated, progressive and varied experience in hydrology, hydraulics, fluvial geomorphology, soil and geotechnical engineering and/or river engineering.
- Experience in flood hazard management.
- Experience working co-operatively with other levels of government or agencies, and the public.
- Experience with procurement and contract administration and management.
Preference may be given to applicants with one (1) or more of the following:
- Advanced experience of hydraulic (river) modelling and hydrotechnical engineering, hydrologic process and analysis, multi-disciplinary resource inventory projects and associated computer systems.
- Experience supporting local governments, First Nations and the general public during emergency conditions.
- Experience in the operation of large-scale multi-purpose reservoir storage systems.
Additional Requirements:
- Must possess and maintain a valid BC Class 5 Driver’s Licence or equivalent.
- Must be willing and able to travel and conduct field work in occasionally physical challenging circumstances and adverse weather conditions.
- Must be willing and able to be available 24/7 to respond to emergencies and perform a variety of duties within the scope of the position’s regular responsibilities and to represent the Ministry at public meetings and events.

About this Position:
This is a temporary, full time opportunity to February 19th, 2027; this may be extended or become a permanent position.
This position can be located in Penticton, Vernon, Kamloops or Merritt.
