The Team
MCFD’s Youth Forensic Psychiatric Services Victoria Clinic team is a group of experienced professionals, including administrative staff, clinicians, and testing assistants. This established team is part of a larger provincial service and collaborates with social workers, psychologists, psychiatrists, nurses, and contractors to provide direct client care. The Role
Under the direction and supervision of the Clinic Coordinator, Regional Manager or Director of Operations the Psychiatric Social Worker works as part of a multi-disciplinary team to provide mental health assessments and treatment services, often court-ordered, to youth who are in custody or under community youth justice supervision due to their involvement with the criminal justice system. The Psychiatric Social Worker is responsible for coordinating referrals for assessment and treatment by completion of a comprehensive psycho-social assessment for court-ordered and court-related referrals. This includes the provision of individual, group and family counselling to young persons and caregivers, liaison with mental health professionals, social service agencies, probation officers, courts, school personnel, hospitals, and other professionals to identify local resources and ensure community ability to respond to the needs of each youth who have offended, as outlined in a discharge plan; and participation in educational seminars and conferences on youth who have offended for staff, community agencies and students in training for child care, social work, nursing, psychology and psychiatry.
Qualifications:
Education and Experience Requirements
- Masters in Social Work preferred; or equivalent education and training (e.g. Masters in Educational Counselling and Masters in Clinical Psychology or comparable graduate degree at the Master’s level).
- NOTE: If your degree was obtained outside of Canada, you need to confirm it has been assessed for equivalency through the International Credential Evaluation Services (ICES). You must provide a basic report by the closing date of this posting to be considered.
- NOTE: Successful MSW prepared candidates are required to seek and obtain clinical registration with the British Columbia College of Social Workers (BCCSW), within 6 months of having completed the required 3000 hours of supervised clinical practice.
- Minimum of two (2) years of relevant clinical experience working within an adolescent mental health environment.
- Must possess and maintain a valid class 5 BC Driver’s license with no restriction or equivalent (i.e. from another Canadian Province).
Preference may be given to applicants with the following:
- Applicants who have two (2) or more years’ experience working with adolescents in a forensic or community mental health setting.
- Applicants who have experience providing a range of outpatient-oriented assessment and treatment services.
Willingness/proviso requirements
- May be required to use own vehicle on an expense account basis.
- May be required to travel in all (reasonable) weather conditions and to remote locations.
- May work with families and children and youth who are distressed and facing challenges which may occasionally involve exposure to unpleasant situations or behaviour with angry, abusive, or abused clients; exposure to hazards from frequently working around parents and/or children in crisis who may display volatile behaviour.
